What I Eat Every Day to Stay Fit at 57

By Dr. Juan Salinas

The nutrition and training system I've refined for more than 30 years.

People often assume I only follow a strict nutrition and workout plan when I'm getting ready for a bodybuilding competition or a television appearance like Shark Tank.

The truth is...

I eat this way almost every day.

Sure, I make a few adjustments before a competition, but the foundation never changes. These are the same principles I've followed for more than 30 years to stay healthy, build muscle, keep body fat under control, and have the energy to enjoy life.

This isn't another trendy diet.

It's simply the system that has worked for me over and over again.

It starts with a healthy snack LIKE THIS

Where It All Started

I wasn't always a nutrition scientist.

I was a skinny kid who loved sports.

Swimming was my first passion, but when I got to college, I wanted to build muscle and become stronger. I joined a gym and immediately became fascinated by how the body responded to training and nutrition. I started reading every bodybuilding and nutrition magazine I could get my hands on, trying to understand why some approaches worked while others failed.

That curiosity eventually became my career.

I earned my Ph.D. in Food Science, became a Certified Sports Nutritionist, worked in sports nutrition with PowerBar, and spent my professional life developing food products.

At the same time, I continued training and competing in natural bodybuilding.

Over the years, I won first place in many competitions, but one of my proudest moments came recently at age 55 when I competed at the Mr. Universe Championships, placing 1st in Men's Physique and 2nd in Bodybuilding.

That didn't happen because I discovered some secret supplement or miracle diet.

It happened because I kept refining the same nutrition and training principles for more than three decades.

The same principles I still follow today.

This Isn't a Competition Diet

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that I only eat healthy when I'm preparing for a competition.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

I don't believe in "getting in shape."

I believe in staying in shape.

The adjustments I make before a competition are actually very small. The foundation remains exactly the same all year long.

That's because healthy eating shouldn't feel like punishment.

It should simply become the way you live.

Principle #1: Eat Before You're Hungry

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is waiting until they're starving before they eat.

When that happens, it's much harder to make good food choices, and it's easy to overeat.

My plan encourages eating approximately every 2½ to 3 hours, which usually works out to about five meals throughout the day.

The goal isn't to eat more food.

The goal is to spread your nutrition throughout the day so your body always has a steady supply of energy while helping control hunger.

Principle #2: Make Protein the Foundation

Every meal in my plan contains protein.

Protein helps maintain muscle, supports recovery after exercise, and keeps you feeling satisfied longer.

Whether your goal is losing weight, maintaining muscle, or simply aging well, getting enough protein matters.

Instead of guessing, I show you exactly how to calculate your daily protein needs based on your body weight and your personal goals.

No gimmicks.

No guesswork.

Principle #3: Carbohydrates Aren't the Enemy

For years, carbohydrates have gotten a bad reputation.

The truth is...

Carbohydrates are fuel.

The key isn't eliminating them.

It's learning how much your body actually needs and when to eat them.

The plan teaches you how to calculate your carbohydrate intake based on your activity level and goals so your body uses those carbohydrates for energy rather than storing the excess.

Principle #4: Train Smarter, Not Longer

People are often surprised that my workouts typically last about an hour.

I don't spend hours in the gym.

Instead of the traditional "four sets of ten reps," many of my workouts use timed intervals—20 seconds of exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest—for a total of two minutes per exercise.

This keeps the muscles under continuous tension while allowing many people to get an excellent workout without needing extremely heavy weights that can place unnecessary stress on the joints.

The workouts are challenging, efficient, and realistic for busy people.

The complete program is divided into five workout days so every major muscle group is trained throughout the week, and it also includes cardio recommendations for those looking to burn additional calories or improve cardiovascular fitness.

Why I Created This Plan

When I founded P-nuff Crunch, my mission was never just to create a better snack.

It was to help people live healthier lives.

During COVID, I finally sat down and organized everything I had learned over the previous 30 years into one complete guide.

I wanted people to have the exact system I had spent decades refining through education, research, coaching, and real-life experience.

Not another fad diet.

Not another 30-day challenge.

A practical system that people could follow for years.

Does It Work?

I've tested this system for over thirty years.

I've used it while preparing for bodybuilding competitions.

I've used it before appearing on Shark Tank.

I've used it while traveling.

I've used it while building P-nuff Crunch.

And perhaps most importantly...

I still use it today.

Not because I'm preparing for another competition.

Because it's become my lifestyle.

I truly believe that's the biggest difference between this program and most of the diets you'll find online.

This isn't something I created for a business.

It's something I've lived.

Every.

Single.

Day.
