7 Easy After-School Snacks Kids Will Actually Want to Eat

7 Easy After-School Snacks Kids Will Actually Want to Eat

By Dr. Juan Salinas

There's a time of day when I almost always get hungry.

It's usually right after I'm done working and before I head to the gym.

Dinner is still a few hours away, and I don't want a full meal before I work out. But I'm hungry enough that I need something to hold me over.

I've often thought that kids have their own version of exactly the same thing.

They get home from school, drop the backpack, and one of the first things you hear is:

“I'm hungry!”

Dinner might still be two or three hours away.

And that's where a good after-school snack comes in.

The easy answer is cookies, candy, chips or another sugary treat. They'll certainly eat it! But we can do better without making snack time boring.

The goal isn't another full meal. It's an easy after-school snack that tastes great, provides some real nutrition and helps bridge the gap until dinner.

And healthy snacks for kids definitely don't have to be boring.

Here are seven of my favorite healthy after-school snack ideas.

1. Apple “Donuts” + P-nuff Crunch

This one is ridiculously easy and fun for kids.

You'll need:

  • 1 apple

  • Peanut or almond butter

  • Cinnamon

  • P-nuff Original Roasted Peanut

Make it:

Slice the apple horizontally into circles and remove the center to make them look like little donuts.

Spread a thin layer of peanut or almond butter over each one.

Then crush a few Original Roasted Peanut P-nuff Crunch puffs and sprinkle them over the top.

Finish with a little cinnamon.

You get the sweetness and fiber from the apple, some protein from the peanut butter and a great crunch from P-nuff.

Dr. Juan tip: Let the kids decorate their own. Food is usually more fun when they're involved in making it.

2. Cocoa P-nuff Banana Bites 🍌🍫

This might be my favorite.

You'll need:

  • 1 banana

  • Peanut butter

  • Cocoa P-nuff Crunch

Make it:

Slice the banana into bite-sized rounds.

Put a small amount of peanut butter on each slice.

Crush some Cocoa P-nuff Crunch and sprinkle it over the top.

That's it.

Banana + peanut + cocoa gives you that chocolate-peanut-butter combination kids love without turning the afternoon snack into a candy bar.

You can also put another banana slice on top and make little banana sandwiches.

3. The 2-Minute Yogurt Crunch Bowl

When you're really short on time, this is hard to beat.

You'll need:

  • Plain or lower-sugar Greek yogurt

  • Strawberries, blueberries or banana

  • Cinnamon P-nuff Crunch

  • Optional small drizzle of honey

Put everything in a bowl and top it with Cinnamon P-nuff Crunch.

The P-nuff acts almost like a crunchy cereal or granola topping.

Greek yogurt adds protein, fruit brings sweetness and fiber, and Cinnamon P-nuff gives you that satisfying crunch.

And it takes about two minutes.

4. Frozen Cocoa P-nuff Yogurt Bark

Here's an easy snack for kids that you can make ahead and keep in the freezer.

You'll need:

  • Greek yogurt

  • Strawberries or banana

  • Cocoa P-nuff Crunch

  • Optional small drizzle of honey

Spread the yogurt onto parchment paper.

Add sliced fruit and crushed Cocoa P-nuff on top.

Freeze until firm and then break it into pieces.

Now you've got a cold, crunchy after-school treat ready to go.

It's especially good during those hot August and September afternoons.

5. Sweet & Salty P-nuff Snack Mix

This is another one kids can help make themselves.

Mix together:

  • Original Roasted Peanut P-nuff

  • Whole-grain cereal

  • Raisins or another dried fruit

  • A few dark chocolate chips

  • Pumpkin or sunflower seeds, if appropriate

Put everything in a container, shake it up and you're done.

You get sweet + salty + crunchy in every handful.

You can even portion the mix into small containers on Sunday and have several after-school snacks ready for the week.

6. Cinnamon Apple Yogurt Dip

Here's another incredibly simple healthy snack recipe for kids.

Mix:

  • Greek yogurt

  • A little cinnamon

  • A small spoonful of peanut butter

Serve it with sliced apples.

Then put some Cinnamon P-nuff Crunch on the side for dipping — or crush it and sprinkle it over the yogurt.

It feels like a treat, but you're combining fruit, protein and crunch instead of simply opening a package of cookies.

7. The “I Have Zero Time” Snack

And then there's real life. :)

You don't always have time to make a recipe.

Some days the kids get home, you're finishing work, somebody needs to get to soccer practice, somebody else has homework, and dinner hasn't even started.

For those days:

Fruit + P-nuff Crunch + water or milk.

Done.

An apple, banana, berries or grapes alongside a serving of P-nuff makes an easy grab-and-go after-school snack without any preparation.

Sometimes simple wins.

My Formula for a Better After-School Snack

You'll probably notice a pattern in these after-school snack ideas.

I try to combine:

PROTEIN + FIBER + SOMETHING THEY LOVE

It doesn't need to be perfect.

And it definitely doesn't need to look like something you found on Pinterest.

The goal is simply to give kids something satisfying that provides more nutrition than the typical sugary or heavily processed treat — while still leaving room for dinner.

That's actually the same principle I use for myself.

My snack before heading to the gym isn't supposed to replace dinner.

It's there to bridge the gap.

An after-school snack can do the same thing for kids.

Healthy Snacks Don't Have to Be Boring

This is something I come back to again and again as both a food scientist and the founder of a snack company.

We can formulate the most nutritionally impressive food in the world.

But if people don't enjoy eating it, we've missed something pretty important.

Especially with kids.

That's why I love taking familiar foods — bananas, apples, yogurt, peanut butter — and making them a little more fun with different flavors and textures.

And yes, sometimes that means throwing a few P-nuff Crunch on top. :)

Because when you're looking for healthy snacks for kids, I think the goal should be pretty simple:

Something you feel good about giving them + something they're excited to eat.
